John writes his second letter to the first church of seven. The church in Smyrna is living under pressure--poverty, slander, imprisonment, and threat of death. Jesus warned his followers there will be a cost. This lovely church heard a loud and clear message from the Risen Lord: Fear Not. No matter the trial, Jesus would uphold them. This promise has proven true for the earliest martyrs and today's persecuted church. And it's true as we face financial, physical, and social pressures of our own.

Passage: Ruth 1:1-22
Duration: 49 mins 14 secs
Some people have a harder lot in life than others. Job is among the most famous biblical sufferers. But there is another, less often discussed sufferer. Her name is Naomi, and we read her story of dramatic status change, mounting losses, and waiting on God. Fortunately for Naomi, God showed up in the kindness of her daughter-in-law who shared her burden. God's kindness still shows up today through human kindness.

From a young age many of us learn to pray simply as a means of getting things from God or returning thanks to Him. This treats God like a genie in a lamp. What happens when God does not grant our wishes? What happens when we say know? Well, it turns us toward the true purpose of prayer: relationship. This sermon helps us remember the real reason for prayer is connecting to God, even amid our hardest moments.

Passage: John 11:1-44
Duration: 46 mins 49 secs
Long before we put God on trial for all the world's problems, prophets and psalmists raising similar objections to God. Why do you stand far off? Why do evil people prosper? How long will you reject me? These questions surface our pain, confusion, and doubt amidst suffering. But again and again, God's Word affirms there is purpose in the pain. This sermon will look at the death of Lazarus (John 11) to give insight to God's allowance of suffering. Jesus shows that short-term suffering (no matter how painful) teaches us to seek long-term hope.

Passage: Job 38:1-42:6
Series: God 101
Duration: 41 mins 56 secs
As children we learn to sing "Our God is so big. Our God is so mighty. There's nothing our God cannot do." Then we grow up and face suffering. Suddenly God seems small, impotent, uncaring. The story of Job reminds us of how big God is even in the face of our suffering.

Our culture denies death. Listen to the headlines advertisements: we're always attempted to prolong life, mask aging, and defeat sickness. The apostle Paul faced his mortality. "To live is Christ and to die is gain," he wrote. He cares less about ending suffering, and more about intimacy with Jesus. Listen in.
